Qualifications/Requirements

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER OR RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, AND/OR INUIT). MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

– Undergraduate Bachelors degree in communications/journalism or a related field required.

EXPERIENCE: – Five years of directly related strategic communications experience required. – Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering strategic communications plans required. – Extensive experience writing and editing for both print and digital media required. – Extensive demonstrated experience, knowledge, and competency with respect to Indigenous cultures and histories required. – Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations required. – Demonstrated experience preparing and delivering communications and marketing materials (print and digital) required. – Experience developing and delivering programs for Indigenous youth required. – Experience in event planning and execution, specifically events for media required. – Experience supervising and assigning staff required. – Experience, knowledge and competency with respect to Indigenous cultures and histories required. – Experience working with budgets preferred. – An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: – Demonstrated cultural competency skills and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations required. – Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written) required. – Excellent writing and editing skills required. – A high level of initiative and problem-solving skills required. – Must be a creative thinker with a proven track record of successful strategic communications planning and implementation. – Must have exceptional leadership and relationship building skills. – Possess a high degree of independence and diplomacy required. – Demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration and partnership with academic and administrative colleagues, students, alumni, Elders, community partners, and external vendors required. – Superior time management skills and the ability to prioritize conflicting demands required. – Advanced level of proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint required. – Advanced knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Drupal, WordPress, and social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and/or the ability to learn and adapt to new computer and web programs, and social media trends quickly required. – Excellent photography and videography skills required. – Attention to detail is required. – Ability to think critically and creatively required. – Ability to work independently required. – Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with high demand and/or stressful contacts. – Must have a strong work ethic. – Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
